In 1938 3,000 Thompson Mle1921 (and 30,000,000 .45ACP cartridges) are ordered to the USA and they are all delivered by end 1939. They are nonetheless judged too heavy, bulky and too expensive.

Most of the 3,000 Thompson Mle1921 SMGs remained surprisingly in armories or were only tested in Morocco during 1940. They were only issued occasional in May/June 1940 or delivered to military police units (e.g. gendarmes that fought on the Loire River in June 1940).

The Thompson SMGs were for example also used by the Laffly W15T CC tank destroyer crews (126 SMGs issued to the 14 self-propelled anti-tank batteries) and apparently by several AA units. They were more largely distributed among the Vichy French troops in 1941.

Manufactured by Colt, Hartford, Ct. - Standard Model 1921 Thompson submachine gun as produced by Colt and modified for the U.S. Navy. One of small number purchased by U.S. Navy in 1928 and modified by replacing vertical forearm with horizontal one and adding weight to bolt to slow rate of fire. Wood butt is detachable. Cyclic rate of fire 600 rpm. Equipped with Type L- 50-round drum magazine and Cutts compensator.

Basically a M1921 modified for the U.S. Navy by changing pistol grip to a carbine type foregrip with sling swivel and adding weight to bolt assembly. 6-groove rifling, right hand twist. Cyclic rate of fire 800 rpm. Muzzle velocity 920 fps. Weapon weighs approximately 10.8 lbs. Complete with 20-round detachable box magazine, Cutts compensator, and in excellent condition.

Löytyykö keltään venäläistä sotasaalis Thompsonia ? Että mitä mallia nämä "aseapu" Thopsonit olivat ,vai oliko kaikkia mahdollisia malleja ?

Suomalaisten sotasaaliiksi saamat olivat ilmeisesti kaikki M1928A1:iä, mutta valokuvissa näkyy itänaapurin lend-lease vaunujen miehistöillä(*) muistaakseni myös myöhempiä versioita.

(*) Valtaosa neukkulaan toimitetuista Thompson:eista tuli sinne jenkkiläisten panssariajoneuvojen kanssa, koska niiden perusvarustukseen kuului usein yksi Thompson-kp.
